A kabuki actor who carries Kataoka Ainosuke, a hereditary name of the Matsushimaya house, having taken the sixth generation of it in 1992. He is also the fourth head of the Umemoto school of Kamigata dance.
According to the Kabuki Actor Directory, he was born on 4 March 1972. In December 1981 he became a heyago (an apprentice taken into the household) of Kataoka Nizaemon XIII, making his stage debut at the Minamiza as the sword-bearer in Kanjinchō, under the name Kataoka Chiyomaru.
In January 1992 he was adopted by Kataoka Hidetarō and took the name Kataoka Ainosuke VI at the Nakaza in Osaka, as Suruga Jirō in Kanjinchō; he was promoted to nadai in 1994. In 2005 he received the Osaka Performing Arts Award for Encouragement and collective recognition as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property. In December 2008 he succeeded as the fourth head of the Umemoto school of Kamigata dance, under the name Umemoto Senshō III (Kabuki Actor Directory).
What They Inherit
He entered as a household apprentice and inherited the name by adoption — a reminder that blood is not the only path by which this art is handed on.
