HOUSES — YAGŌ

Houses (Yagō)

Kabuki actors belong to houses, and each house is known by its yagō — the name shouted from the seats: 'Naritaya!'. Each house has its own hereditary names, crest and house art. Here the houses are introduced not by rank but each with its own history and art.

Each house is described only from what could be checked against its own records, the Kabuki Actor Directory, the Kabuki Encyclopedia and the Kabuki Play Guide. House names follow the sources' own spelling — the Nakamura Shikan and Nakamura Ganjirō families are both read 'Narikomaya' but written with different characters. Others follow by the same procedure.
