OTOWAYA — YAGŌ
Otowaya
Otowaya is the yagō (house name) of the Onoe Kikugorō family. The Kabuki Encyclopedia describes the Onoe house as an Edo-kabuki family centred on the name Kikugorō, 'skilled for generations in sewamono' (domestic plays); its house art is the Shinko Engeki Jisshu established by Kikugorō V. The current Onoe Kikugorō, the eighth, took the name in May 2025.
The Kabuki Encyclopedia's entry on the Onoe house places it at the centre of Edo kabuki around the name Onoe Kikugorō, skilled for generations in sewamono. Kikugorō III is known for Oiwa and two other roles in Tōkaidō Yotsuya Kaidan; Kikugorō V for the domestic plays of Mokuami; Kikugorō VI for dance and sewamono. Onoe Baikō VI and VII and Onoe Shōroku II appear in the same entry.
The house art is the Shinko Engeki Jisshu. The Kabuki Encyclopedia calls it a collection of the family's signature roles over the generations; the Kabuki Play Guide explains that Kikugorō V established it from dance-dramas of spirits and apparitions he created and premiered, and that Kikugorō VI added Migawari Zazen. The crest is kasane-ōgi ni daki-gashiwa.
The current Onoe Kikugorō, the eighth, took the name in May 2025, having performed as Onoe Kikunosuke V; Onoe Kikunosuke VI took his name the same year. Onoe Kikugorō VII is listed in the 'current actors' section of the Kabuki Actor Directory.
As for the origin of the house name: the Kabuki Encyclopedia notes that the origins of yagō in general are not clearly known, and this site leaves this house's unstated until a primary source confirms it.

Crest — Kasane-ōgi ni daki-gashiwa: The Kabuki Actor Directory gives Onoe Kikugorō VIII's crest as kasane-ōgi ni daki-gashiwa (stacked fans with paired oak leaves), Kikugorō VII's as the same with yotsuwa (four rings), and Onoe Shōroku's as yotsuwa ni daki-gashiwa.
House arts and repertoire
A 'selected repertoire' and a 'house art' are different things. Their names and origins differ from house to house; no single system is shared by all.
Shinko Engeki Jisshu
Established by Onoe Kikugorō V from the dance-dramas of spirits and apparitions he created and premiered; Kikugorō VI added Migawari Zazen (Kabuki Play Guide).

The Kabuki Encyclopedia describes the Onoe house as 'skilled for generations in sewamono'. Not a codified list but a house art handed down as a strength.
