TACHIBANAYA — YAGŌ
Tachibanaya
Tachibanaya is the yagō (house name) of the Ichimura Uzaemon family. Ichimura Uzaemon XV (1874–1945), whom the Kabuki Actor Directory describes as the foremost popular actor from the mid-Taishō era onward, was a nimaime leading man; the Kae-shū, gathering his signature roles, is the house art. The house is connected with the Ichimura-za, and the name Ichimura Kakitsu was once borne by Onoe Kikugorō V and by Uzaemon XV himself.
According to the Kabuki Actor Directory, Ichimura Uzaemon XV was adopted at the age of five by Bandō Kakitsu I, made his stage debut in 1881, took the name Ichimura Kakitsu VI in 1893 and Ichimura Uzaemon XV in 1903. His roles included Kirare Yosa, Naozamurai, Sukeroku and Togashi in Kanjinchō, and in 1943 he became the first president of the Greater Japan Actors' Association.
Ichimura Uzaemon XVII (1916–2001) came from the Bandō family, performing as Bandō Kamezō III, Bandō Shinsui VII and Bandō Hikosaburō VII before taking the seventeenth generation of the name at the Kabukiza in October 1955 in Ishikiri Kajiwara. Ichimura Manjirō II is his second son, and Ichimura Takematsu VI and Ichimura Hikaru I are Manjirō's first and second sons (Kabuki Actor Directory).
Ichimura Kakitsu XVII, eldest son of Ichimura Kichigorō II, took his name in October 1967. The Directory notes that the eighth Kakitsu was a former name of Onoe Kikugorō V — who with Ichikawa Danjūrō IX dominated the Meiji stage — and the tenth of the celebrated Ichimura Uzaemon XV: a considerable name, bound up with the Ichimura-za of the Edo sanza. The present status of the name Ichimura Uzaemon is not stated in the sources gathered, so this site does not assert it.
Crest — Neagari-tachibana and uzumaki: The Kabuki Actor Directory gives the crest of Ichimura Uzaemon XV and XVII and of Ichimura Manjirō II as neagari-tachibana and uzumaki; of Ichimura Takematsu VI and Ichimura Hikaru I as neagari-tachibana; of Ichimura Kakitsu XVII as newari-tachibana and uzumaki; and of Ichimura Kitsutarō I as mitsu-ashi-tachibana.
House arts and repertoire
A 'selected repertoire' and a 'house art' are different things. Their names and origins differ from house to house; no single system is shared by all.
Kae-shū
'Kae' was the haiku name of Ichimura Uzaemon XV. The Kabuki Play Guide observes that it reads less like a house art than a line-up of his signature roles; it is handed down as pairs of play and role rather than as plays.
