KYŌYA — YAGŌ

Kyōya

きょうやKyōyaAlso called: Nakamura Jakuemon familyCrest: Kyōya-musubi and mukai-suzume

Kyōya is the yagō (house name) of the Nakamura Jakuemon family. According to the Kabuki Actor Directory, the current Nakamura Jakuemon, the fifth, is the second son of Jakuemon IV; he took the name at the Kabukiza in March 2016 as Tokihime in Kamakura Sandaiki and Yukihime in the Kinkakuji scene of Gion Sairei Shinkōki.

According to the Kabuki Actor Directory, Nakamura Jakuemon V made his stage debut in February 1961 at the Kabukiza as the village child Akashi in Hitofuri Ken, under the name Ōtani Hiromatsu I, and took the name Nakamura Shibajaku VII in September 1964 as Ohiro in Imoseyama Onna Teikin. With the succession of March 2016 he took up the name his late father had also borne.

As the two princess roles of that succession suggest, this house has handed down the art of the onnagata. Neither the Kabuki Encyclopedia nor the Kabuki Play Guide records a codified repertoire for it, and the origin of the house name Kyōya is left unstated here until a primary source confirms it.

Crest — Kyōya-musubi and mukai-suzume: The Kabuki Actor Directory gives the crest of Nakamura Jakuemon V as kyōya-musubi (the Kyōya knot) and mukai-suzume (facing sparrows).
