A kabuki actor who carries Nakamura Jakuemon, the principal name of the Kyōya house, having taken the fifth generation of it in 2016. Both his succession roles were princesses — this is the name of a house that hands down the art of the onnagata.
According to the Kabuki Actor Directory, he was born on 20 November 1955, the second son of Nakamura Jakuemon IV. He made his stage debut in February 1961 at the Kabukiza as the village child Akashi in Hitofuri Ken, under the name Ōtani Hiromatsu I, and in September 1964 took the name Nakamura Shibajaku VII as Ohiro in Imoseyama Onna Teikin.
In March 2016 he took the name Nakamura Jakuemon V at the Kabukiza, as Tokihime in Kamakura Sandaiki and Yukihime in the Kinkakuji scene of Gion Sairei Shinkōki. He received collective recognition in 2005. The Directory notes that it is a great name his late father also bore.
What They Inherit
Tokihime and Yukihime: the two roles chosen for his succession are among the great parts the onnagata tradition has built up over generations.
