A kabuki actor who carries Matsumoto Kōshirō, the principal name of the Kōraiya house, having taken the tenth generation of it in 2018. He is also head of the Matsumoto school of dance.
According to the Kabuki Actor Directory, he was born on 8 January 1973, the eldest son of Matsumoto Hakuō. He made his stage debut in March 1979 at the Kabukiza in Kyōkaku Harusame Gasa, under the name Matsumoto Kintarō III, and in October–November 1981 took the name Ichikawa Somegorō VII as Ōboshi Rikiya in the seventh act of Chūshingura.
He was promoted to nadai at the Kabukiza in April 1994, and in January–February 2018 took the name Matsumoto Kōshirō X there. In that same run his father became Matsumoto Hakuō II and his eldest son Ichikawa Somegorō VIII. The Directory records collective recognition in 2001 and the Japan Art Academy Prize for 2019.
What They Inherit
At the Kabukiza in 2018, three generations changed their names in a single run — a stage on which the whole ladder of names could be seen shifting up at once.
