Photos and footage will be added as rights are cleared.
A kabuki actor who carries Sawamura Tōjūrō, a hereditary name of the Kinokuniya house, having taken the second generation of it in 1976. The house art is the Kōga Jisshu, named after the haiku name of Sawamura Sōjūrō VII.
According to the Kabuki Actor Directory, he was born on 12 October 1943, the second son of Sawamura Sōjūrō VIII. He made his stage debut in January 1957 at the Kabukiza as Ohisa, the daughter at the Ichiriki teahouse in the ninth act of Chūshingura, under the name Sawamura Kiyoshirō.
In September 1976 he took the name Sawamura Tōjūrō II at the Kabukiza, as Shinobu in Shiraishibanashi. In 1972 he received collective recognition as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property and became a member of the Association for the Preservation of Traditional Kabuki (Kabuki Actor Directory).
What They Inherit
The name Kiyoshirō, which he bore at his own debut, passed in 2024 to an adopted artistic heir — names are handed on outside the bloodline too.
