正念場
しょうねんばthe make-or-break moment—a word born in the theatre
INSTANT ANSWER
Shōnenba—Japanese for a make-or-break moment—is said to come from kabuki: the scene in which a character's true nature must be fully revealed.
In kabuki and the puppet theatre, the crucial scene in which an actor must fully reveal a character's shōne—its essential nature—was called the shōneba. The word is said to have merged with the Buddhist term shōnen, meaning focused, undistracted mind, giving us today's spelling of shōnenba.
Today the word is everyday Japanese for any decisive moment. Because it was born from the scene into which an actor pours everything, it still carries the tension of a moment when one's true worth is tested.
Shōnenba is not the only word of this kind. Ōzume, the everyday Japanese term for the final stage of any matter, is said to derive from Edo kabuki, where the last act of a history play was called the ōzume. To pass through one's shōnenba and reach the ōzume—the milestones of modern Japanese trace, word for word, the arc of a day at the theatre.
Shōnenba is one of the clearest examples of kabuki's imprint on modern Japanese. The great scenes handed down in the aragoto repertoire of the Ichikawa Sōke (the head family of the Ichikawa Danjūrō lineage) are themselves a succession of such moments—and on this platform, words like this serve as doorways between the stage and daily life.
