The Story in Three Lines
Kabuki loses nothing when you know the story in advance. Start with just three lines.
- 01
A traveling peddler appears at a gathering in Ōiso, selling uirō, a famous cure-all medicine from Odawara.
- 02
Asked to demonstrate its powers, he launches into the medicine's history and miraculous effects—his tongue growing ever faster in a virtuoso patter speech.
- 03
The peddler is in fact Soga Gorō, come in disguise to confront his father's enemy Kudō Suketsune—and at the speech's end he reveals himself.
Three Things to Watch For
These three points are all the preparation you need. On the day, simply give yourself to the stage.
The tongue-twister aria
A torrent of tongue-twisters delivered in a single accelerating flow—breath, diction, and rhythm on full display.
The art of the voice
Here the true star is the voice itself; few plays reveal an actor's training so directly.
A living text
The speech is still used today as a training text by actors and broadcasters across Japan.
Characters
- The peddler (in truth, Soga Gorō)
- A young aragoto hero disguised as a medicine seller, dazzling his listeners with verbal fireworks.
- Kudō Suketsune
- The man who killed the Soga brothers' father—the axis of confrontation in the Soga plays.
Stagecraft and Highlights
Set in the colourful world of the Soga brothers plays, the piece builds to its freestanding patter speech. Tradition holds that Danjūrō II created the role after the medicine cured an ailment of his own voice.
When the speech reaches its peak, the peddler throws off his disguise and the play closes with an aragoto flourish—the actor's power shifting in an instant from voice to body.
The Ichikawa Connection
One of the Kabuki Jūhachiban. Revived in the modern era after a long absence, it is often chosen in the Ichikawa Sōke for stage debuts and name-succession milestones—a play of special meaning to the house.
